What is FitKids?
FitKids is a specialized program designed to educate children about nutrition and fitness, while encouraging them to establish healthy habits through fun activities and programs.

FitKids currently offers a school toolkit, health and fitness coloring book and the FitKids Flash quarterly newsletter. Each fall, FitKids hosts several fun promotions including a T-shirt design contest, Kid Chef recipe entry and FitKid Challenge, which rewards fitness achievements of children under 18. A newly developed interactive web tool helps children record their activities and fruit/vegetable intake.

FitKids is sponsored through a grant by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.

Helping Kids Get Fit
To encourage children to establish healthy habits, Texas Round-Up’s FitKids program not only includes the Governor’s Challenge for children, but also educates children about nutrition and fitness through fun activities and programs.

60 Minutes a Day, 5 Days a Week
According to the American Heart Association, children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week. Texas Round-Up created its FitKids program to help children achieve this goal and keep them motivated to establish healthy eating and exercise habits for the rest of their lives.

FitKids Resources
The FitKids newsletter and coloring book are the latest additions to our resources for children. Current FitKids activities include a FitKid Challenge, searching for a young spokesperson to motivate other children to make healthy choices and the T-shirt design contest, where the winning design will be used on the T-shirt for the Family Mile at the 6th Annual Texas Round-Up in April 2009.

Teachers, be sure to check out the Tools for Schools presentation, as well as our Governor's School Challenge handout. (view a Spanish language version of the Governor's School Challenge handout.)

PTA members, be sure to check out our presentation on how to increase family and community involvement in your healthy lifestyles program.

Please take some time to explore the FitKids website and see the various resources and tools to keep kids fit.
